Ferns Therapy
Individual therapy sessions in-person, online or in nature.
About me
I believe in the transformative power of being truly heard and reaching greater understanding, with someone who meets you with kindness.
Hello, I’m Charlotte Ferns - a Training Psychotherapist, based in Devon.
I have worked with a diverse range of clients at organisations such as Headstrong Counselling and The Swan Project. I have experience particularly of working with anxiety, depression, loss, addiction, and trauma; though I am interested in each individual’s life experience first and foremost.
I draw on contemporary theories, including: how our nervous systems are regulated, the relationship between mind and body, early development and how our wellbeing is interconnected with our identity, relationships, and the world around us.
I aim to offer my perspective lightly. I don’t diagnose based on medical/disorder models but have a working understanding of relevant mental health classifications and services.
I am a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy and subscribe to their ethical guidelines. I receive regular supervision from an accredited professional, who reviews my work to ensure that I am working in the best interest of clients.
I am a current student on the MSc Integrative Psychotherapy course at The Metanoia Institute. I continue to expand my learning with regular professional training sessions from a range of reputable providers.
Therapy has had a profound impact in my life and I continue my own journey with a personal therapist every week. I am most at peace in the outdoors, enjoying the beautiful nature that Devon has to offer.
Calm, empathetic, affirming
and insightful.
Working with me
Free initial conversation
15 minutes online or over the phone for an initial conversation.
Whilst not essential, I recommend that you speak with 2 - 3 therapists before you chose someone you feel comfortable with.
If you decide to work with me, we will begin sessions by going through an agreement together, talking about your history and what brings you to therapy, in a full-length session.
In-person therapy
In person sessions are held at The Practice Rooms in Exeter.
15-16 Castle St, Exeter EX4 3PT
Online therapy
Online sessions are held as a video call.
You must be able to join these from a place where your privacy is protected and the session can offer therapeutic value.
Nature therapy
Walking and outdoor sessions on and around Dartmoor.
I ask to meet clients for a couple of sessions before we agree that therapy at a different location will be suitable.
All sessions are:
50 minutes
£50 / session
Please talk to me if cost is a barrier to you accessing therapy and we will review, some concessions are available for those on low incomes.
Sessions are once per week. Depending on your circumstances, twice weekly may be appropriate. I understand that juggling with life and work commitments can be hard - please be aware that consistency and attendance each week is important.

Frequently asked questions
-
Sessions are £50 per 50 minute session as standard.
Some concessions are available for those on low incomes, as I understand that cost can be a barrier to accessing therapy.
-
I ask for 7 days notice for any cancellation, otherwise sessions are chargeable.
If there are mitigating circumstances, this will be taken into account.
I ask clients to commit to attending regularly and to be respectful of my time. We will talk through all of this and further details are in the client-counsellor agreement.
I will try and make an alternative session time available occasionally, though this may not always be possible.

Psychotherapy is typically more involved, seeking to gain a deeper understanding of who we are and making sense of things with relevant theories. It therefore requires more training and hours to be accredited as a practitioner.
Counselling is typically shorter term, focusing on a current issue and providing support.
Therapy is typically a catchall term, or shorthand for psychotherapy.
I have experience of both styles and am continuing my training as part of an accredited course.
I am happy to evidence my qualifications.
-
I aim to be an inclusive and anti-oppressive practitioner for clients from a diverse range of backgrounds and life expressions.
That includes being a LGBTQIA+ gender and sexuality affirming practitioner. My pronouns are she/her. I have worked with members of the queer community, and those in ethical non-monogamous relationships.
I invite you to share as much or as little as you want with me, depending on how relevant your identity is to what you want to explore in therapy.
-
Unfortunately not at the moment, though I have plans to in future.
-
We will review how we are working together every 6 sessions and you are free to give me feedback or ask questions at any time. I encourage clients to be open with me. Working through differences in relationship is often part of the work and I would hope that therapy offers a place to practice that with me in a safe space.
If you feel unable to resolve an issue with me or have found the service offered to be unethical, you can complain to the UKCP. Details of how to do this are in the client-counsellor agreement.

Nature therapy is a growing field as we recognise more and more the importance of fresh air, grounding, movement and connection with our environment.
Many find natural places, for instance woodlands, beaches, moorland… therapeutic spaces to be. They can also provide powerful metaphors and imagery to help express creatively what’s going on for us.
These are still theoretically-based talking therapy sessions, though we may also chose to intentionally engage with the natural environment.
Confidentiality is still very important and we will select a location where anonymity can be preserved.
Some people who are perhaps less comfortable with prolonged eye contact, may find nature therapy a more accessible experience.
We can work around any physical requirements to ensure that sessions can take place outdoors for anyone. Please talk to me about this.
Nature therapy can be particularly effective for those experiencing eco and climate anxiety.
Transport is not provided.
